Hello, I am Emily, and I am thrilled to be learning at Aurora for my final year of placements! I was lucky enough to grow up watching my mother practice midwifery in hospital as a nurse-midwife, and then in the wider community around Calgary as a community midwife. She laid the foundation for my deep belief that birth is inherently normal, and that people deserve care that honours informed choice and autonomy. My calling to midwifery was later in life, after many years of being drawn to healthcare, specifically practices that offered choice and partnership with clients. Before my studies at MRU I completed a degree in gender studies on the East Coast, and pursued a career as an independent musician in Calgary and Toronto. I was fortunate to attend the birth of a dear friend after moving back to Alberta a few years ago, which confirmed for me the transformative, unique power (and honour) of people bringing their babies into the world. And so began this journey! I look forward to meeting and supporting Aurora families over the next year.
In my down time I am typically hanging out with my partner and our new pup, Winnie, reading, spending time with my many nieces and nephews, outside exploring, or baking.
