Hayley Schmidt - Midwife

I am originally from Calgary, having recently returning from Ontario where I completed my midwifery degree. I am absolutely ecstatic to be back home once more! One could not ask for a more supportive practice and feel very lucky to join the talented ranks of these women at Aurora.

Midwives shaped my life long before I started on my path to becoming one. My mother Kimberley answered the same calling over 11 years ago and has been supporting birthing families for as long as I can remember. After completing my doula training and attending births, I was undeniably hooked on birth culture and decided to follow in her footsteps.

I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Midwifery from McMaster University in 2016. During my training I learned from practitioners in Hamilton, Oakville, Burlington and the distant south pacific island of Vanuatu. Prior to McMaster’s Midwifery Education Program, I pursued a Psychology degree at the University of Calgary, worked as a DONA certified doula and volunteered with the Calgary SPCA. In my downtime I enjoy baking, crocheting, occasional cardio, camping and travel.

I hold a deep respect for birthing families and believe wholeheartedly that childbearing is a healthy, normal life event. The capacity for empowerment, evolution and intimacy involved in pregnancy and birth never fails to astound me and I am honoured to make it a part of my life.
In time I’d like to cultivate a working relationship with Calgary’s deaf and hard of hearing community and birthing families who identify as LGBTQ. Birth is a universal, unifying event with the capacity to bring us all closer. I hope to lend my skills and knowledge in support of those who seek a safe space to welcome their babies!
